US-based 12 West Capital owns 18.5m shares in the shipowner, according to a filing with the US Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC).
The hedge fund bought around 2m shares between late November and Wednesday of last week, the filing revealed.
It made eighteen open market purchases between those two dates paying between $2.10 to $2.51 per share.
