Services in the Clyde and Hebrides regions are up for grabs for eight years from 1 October, 2016.
The government will provide up to £1bn of funding to enhance and develop the services, in addition to fares revenue, the Stornoway Gazette reported.
A contract notice has been submitted to the Official Journal of the European Union.
Friday is the first day for bidders to come forward.
