Government sources said the deal was done at talks in New Delhi on Friday, local media reported.

Berthing charges and other fees for the vessels will be charged as if the ships were domestically flagged.

“The commencement of coastal shipping between the two countries would give a boost to export-import trade between India and Bangladesh,” a top Indian official said.

A trial run of the service originally planned for November last year was delayed due to a lack of suitable vessels.
