The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) said the final gate will be installed on the Pacific side Wednesday. The Atlantic gates are already complete.

Once the 4,230-tonne, 57.6-metre-wide gate is installed, contractors will begin make electromechanical connections between the gate and the lock.

The expanded canal, which is scheduled to open its doors early next year, is 87.6% complete.

Once finished, the wider, deeper canal will be able to accommodate containerships as a large as 13,000 teu, up from the current 5,100-teu limitation.
