The development comes in the wake of Iran’s seizure of the 5,470-teu Maersk Tigris (built 2014) earlier this week.
Fox News, quoting an unnamed defence official, says the US Navy will now accompany all US-flagged ships going through the area.
However, Associated Press, again quoting unnamed officials, said the US Navy “won’t technically escort ships, but will let them know in advance that they will monitor the situation” as they transit the narrow Strait from the Persian Gulf toward the Arabian Sea.
