The most closely watched development in Canadian shipping is not among commercial operators, but the federal government’s fleet.

The Canadian Coast Guard’s icebreaker fleet has been a topic of debate since a Transport Canada report published last year said the country’s coastguard faced a “critical” situation with its fleet of icebreakers.

The ageing fleet of 17 vessels has been unable to keep up with demand for icebreaking services, the report concluded.
