Age Remoy-led Rem has paid NOK 345m ($56m) for the VS485 MK III Arctic design vessel at Kleven Verft.

Remoy tells TradeWinds the PSV is similar to three others in the Rem fleet, but this is the owner’s first “fully winterized” vessel.

He says the decision to order the newbuilding comes with increased exploration by oil companies off Russia, in the Barents Sea and Greenland.

“In the years to come this will grow and you need specific vessels for these conditions, particularly in the winter time,” he said.

“This is a start for us.”

Rem has a long, established relationship with the yard, with this deal marking the owner’s 18th newbuilding order at Kleven.

It is due to take delivery of two subsea vessels from the shipbuilder this year.
