Harvey orders MPFSV

Harvey Gulf International Marine has ordered a hybrid multi-purpose field support vessel (MPFSV) newbuilding.

The New Orleans-based shipowner has placed the order at Eastern Shipbuilding Group with delivery set for April 2016.

On delivery from Eastern’s Florida shipyard the US-flagged 9,384-bhp hybrid newbuilding will begin a ten year charter.

The vessel is the fourteenth vessel ordered at Eastern Shipbuilding by Harvey Gulf in the past thirteen years.

In April Harvey Gulf told TradeWinds that it was preparing a newbuilding programme for 2014 that could more than double its existing orderbook.

Chief executive Shane Guidry said the company was aiming to build up to 15 additional newbuildings, to be ordered before the end of the calendar year.

The orders will also include an unspecified number of offshore supply vessels (OSVs), some of them LNG-fuelled and the rest powered by more traditional diesel-electric engines.

Harvey Gulf is the first US owner to order LNG-powered ships, with six currently under construction.
