A World Bank tribunal has ordered the country to pay the money over a claim which stems from the Hugo Chavez era, when 11 Tidewater ships were appropriated by Venezuelan authorities under a law to nationalise them.

But Venezuela sees the decision as a victory since the $46m is much smaller than previous compensation rulings.

Venezuela was ordered to pay US bottle maker Owens-Illinois $455m this month while last year a ruling saw the country pay ExxonMobil $1.6bn.
