Tanker robbed in Africa

A tanker has been robbed near the port of Abidjan in Ivory Coast, an incident which adds to the increasing mobility of Nigeria-based gangs, the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) said.

According to IMB, the attack took place on 27 August, only a day after two other failed pirate attacks just hours apart in waters off Nigeria's southeastern coast.

Twelve armed pirates boarded the tanker, took all the crew hostage, stole cash and then escaped, the IMB report said.

The hijackers destroyed the vessel’s navigation equipment before leaving the ship, but did not hurt any crew members.

Pirate attacks in West Africa’s Gulf of Guinea have almost doubled from last year.

Ivory Coast has added 40 new vessels to its navy in order to confront the increase of criminal activity off its coast.
