Pirates free D’Amato tanker

Pirates have freed a Fratelli D’Amato products tanker that was hijacked off the coast of Somali nearly one year ago.

The Italian owner says the ordeal came to an end today following the release of the 104,300-dwt Savina Caylyn (built 2008), its masters, officers and crew.

The captives, a group comprised of five Italians and 17 Indians, assumed command of the vessel before proceeding to a safe port under the watchful eye of a military escort, according to a statement.

It’s not clear if a ransom was paid.

“In view of the fact that many other seafarers remain in pirate hands it would be inappropriate for Fratelli D’Amato to comment further on any aspect of the case for fear of jeopardizing the safety of those still being held,” D’Amato told trade media Wednesday.

The company applauded the support the Italian government, which issued a statement that included commentary from Prime Minister Mario Monti who "expressed his great satisfaction for the release of the Italian ship Savina Caylyn and the crew”.

The vessel made TradeWinds headlines on 8 February when five pirates in one skiff opened fire on the Italy-flagged products carrier with small arms and RPGs before clambering onboard.
