Bangladeshi shipbreakers are to have talks with the country’s finance ministry in a bid to overturn taxes imposed on the sector earlier this month.

The Bangladesh Shipbreakers Association (BSBA) is due to hold the meeting on Thursday after several weeks of delays, reports cash buyer GMS.

Bangladesh’s budget on 1 June 2017 proposed a 5% increase on customs duty and the introduction of a 15% VAT on imported vessels in a move described as “devastating” by one shipbroker.
