Goulandris Bros is getting a healthy price for an elderly bulker in a sale to Chinese interests. The 73,000-dwt Zagora (built 2001), estimated to have only scrap value early last year, has been sold for $8.8m.

The Greek shipowner bought the Sumitomo-built ship in 2004 as Hedwig Oldendorff for $37.25m.

That allowed it to enjoy several years of a booming market.

Possible sales candidate

Goulandris Bros has not been active in the sale-and-purchase market since 2011, when it sold the 69,000-dwt bulker Lavadara (built 1996) for $22.5m. Before the sale of the Zagora, the company had a fleet of eight bulkers with an average age of eight years. The ships are all either panamaxes or post-panamaxes.

Goulandris Bros has one more vintage bulker that could be a sales candidate. The 74,000-dwt Rodon Amarandon (built 2001) was purchased as a resale in 2001 for just $23m.

The newest ships in the fleet are the 81,000-dwt bulkers Amadeus (built 2016) and Olga V (built 2017).

They were ordered by the company in 2014 in an unreported deal, with a price tag of about $32m to $33m each.
