Juan Azcune, a familiar figure in the demolition market during the heyday of European shipbreaking, is today celebrating his 100th birthday.

Azcune is known around the shipbroking world for his work from the 1960s through until the mid-1990s.

The Spaniard worked the market from Bilbao at a time the country was a dominant force in the business.

Fellow demolition expert Ed McIlvaney, who was introduced to Azcune after joining a scrapping desk in the early 1970s, said: “I personally have Juan to thank for bringing me into the 21st century on a technological front.
