The workforce of 700 people has been told lay-offs could begin in October.
But management said they were legally obliged to make the announcement and that the redundancies were not definite, as new work may be secured in the coming months.
The company said: “Cammell Laird is a contracting business and the nature of our industry is that demand can expand and contract throughout the year.”
