Cattle ships planned

The Indonesian government is planning to order new livestock carriers to meet growing beef demand.

It wants the vessels to carry cattle from outlying islands to the mainland.

The Indonesian transport ministry said the government would provide "several 3,000-gt ships worth IDR 100bn ($10.4m) each, which can carry up to 1,500 head of cattle each.”

The ports of Bakauheni and Sumba are being upgraded and will have new livestock terminals built.

Demand for beef in Indonesia has skyrocketed due to restrictions on the import of live cattle and boxed beef, ABC reported.
