The Commission’s competition commissioner Joaquin Almunia has asked shipbuilders in the Netherlands for further information, shipyard sources said.
Some information has already been provided in response to a complaint dating from December, 2012.
Spanish yards said last year that tax incentives offered in the Netherlands could translate into a 35% subsidy on the price of a ship.
Europe opened an investigation into Spain's own leasing system in June 2011.
