Century off to China

US operator Royal Caribbean Cruises is selling a 1995-built cruiseship to Chinese rival Ctrp International.

The company said the 72,000-gt Celebrity Century (built 1995) will be offloaded for a non-cash loss of $20m.

Royal Caribbean will operate the vessel until April 2015.

CEO Richard Fain said: “Since its inaugural sailing, Celebrity Century has created many wonderful memories for hundreds of thousands of guests, and we expect this successful history to continue as she transitions to the Chinese cruise market.

“The vessel’s sale is an excellent business opportunity for both Royal Caribbean and Ctrip, and will generate strong value for both companies’ shareholders.”

The Meyer Werft-built ship carries 1,814 passengers and 860 crew.
