Brokers say the 310,000-dwt Overseas Sovereign (built 1996) was a scrap candidate until recently when it was purchased by a Singaporean buyer.
Independent sources claim the tanker secured $25m from a conversion buyer, who has yet to be identified.
The price tag is comfortably ahead of the $20m OSG would have achieved from a demolition deal.
Repeated attempts to contact OSG for comment about speculation surrounding the vessel have been unsuccessful.
