The cash will boost the country's ongoing vessel replacement programme, the Fiji Times reported.
"An additional $3m is being budgeted in 2015 to complete the construction works of a third new ship for Government Shipping Services (GSS) to further boost Government's services to our maritime islands," permanent secretary for works Francis Kean said.
The government only owned two ships for 29 years up to 2010, but this has now expanded to six.
