The Danish owner is negotiating to purchase the 50,000-dwt Giacinta (built 2010) and is expected to seal the deal in the coming days.
A price of $21.5m has been placed on the tanker, but sources at Maersk Tanker decline to comment on the figure involved.
The owner has been focused on the products sector for more than a year after shedding much of its crude fleet.
