Aries offloads

US-listed Aries Maritime Transport has sold its idle 1,799-teu boxship Ocean Hope (built 1989) for $2.3m.

Proceeds from the ship’s disposal will go towards paying down debt under Aries’ fully revolving credit facility.

“We are pleased to complete the sale of the Ocean Hope, the oldest vessel in our fleet,” said chief executive Jeff Parry.

“With this transaction, we have enhanced Aries’ fleet profile and improved the company’s financial position.”

The Ocean Hope was redelivered to Aries 14 April 2009 at the end of its charter. The ship is the oldest and smallest among Aries' three boxships.

The ship has been laid up since it came off charterhire due to the difficult market conditions, Parry said earlier this month.

The sale leaves Aries with a fleet of five MR and four panamax tankers and two container vessels with a capacity of 2,917-teu per ship.
