DSME claims victory in patent case

Korean yard says Chinese attempt to block LNG fuel system has failed.

South Korean shipbuilder DSME has won a patent case against a Chinese rival, it said.

The Yonhap news agency reported the yard as saying the row related to its HiVAR-FGSS LNG fuel technology.

It registered a patent in China in 2013.

DSME said a filing by a Chinese shipbuilder with the patent office SIPO to nullify it was dismissed.

Last month, Hyundai Heavy Industries and Samsung Heavy Industries won a patent case against DSME.

DSME's two patents involving LNG boil-off gas (BOG) re-liquefaction technology were found to be indistinguishable from the existing technology, the Korea Herald cited industry sources as saying.

The case began in 2014 when Hyundai and Samsung both claimed DSME had registered systems widely used by shipbuilders.

The intellectual property trial and appeal board ruled in DSME's favour in 2015, but the patent court overturned this.

DSME said it would appeal to the supreme court.
