German shipyard association VSM has warned that significant challenges still face the domestic sector, despite rising levels of new business.
"While the global shipbuilding sector is suffering its worst crisis in decades, German shipyards are receiving record numbers of orders for merchant vessels," it said in its review of 2016.
"Yet, weak global demand and increasing protectionism have set the industry’s alarm bells ringing."
