Tensions are running high as two shipbuilders await an imminent decision from French containership giant CMA CGM over a newbuilding order worth an estimated $1.4bn-plus for up to nine mega-size boxships.

Industry sources report that CMA CGM was due to make a decision by the end of July on whether to award a newbuilding contract to either South Korea’s Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) or China's Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding (SWS) for six firm vessels of about 22,000 teu with a 59-metre beam, plus three optional vessels.
