When pundits talk about the next shipbuilding nation, the conversation often turns to the Philippines and Vietnam.

The countries’ potential comes from a low cost base as well as technical, commercial and financial backing from Far Eastern heavyweights such as Tsuneishi Group, Hanjin Heavy Industries and Hyundai Group.

In output terms, the Philippines is currently the world’s fourth-largest shipbuilder producing 700,000 cgt last year at its three main shipyards.
