Panama gives scrapping convention a major boost

The IMO’s drive towards safe ship scrapping has received a major boost after Panama ratified the Hong Kong Convention on the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships (HKC).

The IMO said Panama, which has about 18% of the world fleet, has become the fifth nation to sign up.

The convention covers the design, construction, operation and preparation of ships so as to facilitate safe and environmentally sound recycling.
