A D’Amico chief engineer has received a jail term in the US after admitting a pollution offence.

Girolamo Curatolo of Sicily pleaded guilty in a Newark court in August to hiding the fact oily waste had been discharged at sea from the 40,100-dwt Cielo di Milano (built 2003).

He was jailed for eight months and fined $5,000, AP reported.

Curatolo, 50, admitted the crew bypassed pollution prevention equipment.
