Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) is launching a new research and development (R&D) scheme for autonomous ocean transport with the backing of the Japanese government.

The shipowner and its partner Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding (MES) developed an innovative technological concept that was selected by Japan’s ministry of land, infrastructure, transportation and tourism.

A consortium which also includes Class NK and the Tokyo University will work on autonomous vessels, setting a course toward development of the technology needed to realize a viable project that can provide safe and efficient ocean transport.
