John Angelicoussis's Maran Tankers is selling its first ship for demolition in four years, with one of its VLCCs set to head to the breakers' beaches.
The 286,000-dwt Maran Lyra (built 1995) has been sold for an undisclosed price, which is likley to be the region of $16m.
Market sources in the past week have suggested that scrap prices for tankers are once again rising above $400 per ldt, which is likely to encourage further demolition activity.
