Gibson Shipbrokers sees today as a compelling time to invest in tankers but it is hopeful a lack of finance will keep a cap on newbuilding orders and allow a rate recovery to unfold.

Richard Matthews, head of research at the brokerage, says 2017 and 2018 will be the bottom of the tanker cycle.

Speaking to TradeWinds during London International Shipping Week, Matthews explained there were too many new tankers coming this year and next to overcome the more challenging demand conditions.
