The Greek government has pledged to carry out urgent inspections on coastal tankers following the sinking of the Agia Zoni II that resulted in a serious oil spill.

The merchant marine ministry said unscheduled checks will apply to small Greek-flagged ships, according to the AP news agency.

The move is a response to the sinking of the 3,200-dwt ship (built 1972) off Salamis island on 10 September.
