From 1 January 2020, a 0.5% limit on the sulphur content of fuel will be applied globally, marking what has been described as the most significant shift in marine fuel since the end of coal-fired engines.

Overnight, the Marpol Annex VI regulation will come into force and an annual 300-million-metric-tonne marine-fuel market will switch overnight from residual heavy fuel oil to cleaner more refined low-sulphur alternatives.
