Regulators are aiming to introduce a far-reaching programme of decarbonisation and, by 2050, will start asking shipping companies to end their reliance on fossil fuels as its main source of energy.

By April next year, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) will present a road map outlining its long-term plans for the decarbonisation of the industry.

It comes as part of its attempt to contribute to the targets for controlling climate change through greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction laid out in the Paris Agreement.
