A fuel tanker has been refloated off the Maldives after grounding on a reef.

The 1,900-dwt Guraab (built 1983) got stuck in the Lhaviyani Atoll while en route to Male on Monday morning, Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) said, according to the Sun website.

The vessel had developed a list, but the 12 crew were said to be safe,

MNDF information officer, captain Ibrahim Azim, said the tanker, operated by Maldives state shipowner State Trading Organization, was refloated with the assistance of Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO)’s Kalaminja 403 vessel in the afternoon.

Coastguard divers were assessing the tanker for potential damage.
