The 164,000–dwt Baikal (built 2008), operated by NITC, arrived at Syros onTuesday with 146,000 tonnes of crude.

It tried to refuel at a terminal owned by Sekavin, butwas refused and left on Tuesday evening, heading towards Myconos. The AIS wasturned off 17 minutes later.

Customs officials on Syros notified the Financial Crimes Squad (SDOE), whichcalled in the coast guard.

Authorities suspect that Baikal was delivering the oil to a customer inGreece or the Balkans in contravention of an EU embargo, the Kathimerini dailyreported.
