Great Eastern stronger

Lower costs and rising revenue have spurred India’s Great Eastern Shipping to a bigger third quarter profit.

The company said net earnings to 31 December were INR 1.91bn ($35.88m), up from INR 874m in the same period of 2011.

Revenue improved to INR 8.8bn against INR 8.36bn, while it managed to cut costs back to INR 4.39bn from INR 5bn the year before.

Crude tankers earned an average of $15,888 per day, down from $18,664 in the same three months of 2012, while products and gas carriers banked more at $16,111 against $14,885.

The figure for bulkers was $8,996, compared to $16,114 in 2012.

The offshore vessels operated by its Greatship unit added INR 1.6bn in operating profit.

Great Eastern said it has contracted revenue for the rest of the financial year of INR 1.78bn.

Crude tankers have 84% of operating days covered, while products and gas carriers have 76% booked in. Bulkers have coverage of 57%.
