New rules will allow a maximum sulphur content of 0.1% in emissions control areas (ECAs) starting 1 January, and premiums in WorldScale (WS) tanker rates will compensate owners for the higher costs of low-sulphur fuel on a dollar-per-laden-mile basis.

George Los, senior market analyst at Connecticut-based Charles Weber, wrote in a note to clients that the premium on the benchmark Rotterdam-to-New York route for medium-range (MR) products tanker adds nearly $17,500 in gross freight, bringing the total to $659,000 for the journey at today’s pirices.

But
