Oil was moved from the OMV-owned Raroa platform off the Taranaki coast to the 105,250-dwt Nectar (built 2005), local media report.
There was some concern that the spill could turn up as tar balls if it hit the coast but this scenario seemed unlikely earlier today.
The spill happened about 70km off the coast but the authorities decided not to close any nearby beaches.
