The 3,500-dwt FT Odin (built 2005) suffered an engine failure earlier this morning.
According to reports from the Athens news agency, winds in the area are reaching seven to eight on the Beaufort scale.
The tanker – with 13 crew on board – was sailing unladen from the Sicilian port of Augusta towards Port Said in Egypt.
The Greek shipping ministry has asked another tanker sailing nearby to be on alert in case the vessel requires assistance.
