The tanker, boxship and bulker owner said Grindrod died on 16 May.
He had clocked up 50 years service – 21 as chairman - with the company and retired in 2007.
In a statement the board spoke of its “great sadness” and sent its deepest condolences to his wife Pauli, daughters Anne-Marie and Josi, and sons Walter and Murray Paul, who are both involved in Grindrod’s operations.
