John Fredriksen has marked down crude tanker asset values for the second time in quick succession with his first secondhand VLCC buy in half a decade setting a new benchmark.

As TradeWinds reported on Friday, Fredriksen’s Frontline has snapped up the 297,600-dwt New Coral (built 2010) and the New Medal (built 2009) in a $117.5m deal with China VLCC.Erik Nikolai Stavseth of Arctic Securities says the New Medal is believed to have cost around $55m and the New Coral in the region of $62m.
