A US judge has issued a judgment finding Citgo liable for a 2004 oil spill from a Tsakos Shipping & Trading tanker.

The ruling by District Judge Joel Slomsky, of the federal court in Philadelphia, requires the Venezuelan refiner to pay $99.5m over the spill from the 60,900-dwt Athos I (built 1983, scrapped 2008).

The ship was holed by an abandoned anchor in the Delaware River as it approached Citgo Asphalt Refining Co (Carco)’s refinery in Paulsboro, New Jersey.
