Lawyers for a Greek chief engineer facing prison time are challenging his conviction, arguing that he was tried under a law meant for masters.

Matthaios Fafalios was convicted by a New Orleans jury last month for violating the Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships (APPS), the US environmental law that codifies the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (Marpol Convention) and its annexes.
