Crews on the big Scorpio bulk carrier and tanker fleets have been signed up for a life and health care insurance package, in a notable move to improve seafarer welfare.

The deal covers not only the 4,800 seafarers working on the 118-vessel fleet but their partners and dependent children, so about 10,000 family members in all.

The insurance has been written through Crewsure, a venture set up by former protection-and-indemnity (P&I) executive Robert Johnston to meet key requirements of the seafarers ‘bill of rights,’ the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC).
