Less headline-grabbing but more important for Coscol’s business is another Chinese government priority, the Maritime Silk Road, the watery side of President Xi Jinping’s “One Belt, One Road” (OBOR) transport infrastructure scheme.

Coscol’s Arctic engagement started with a 2013 voyage by its 19,400-dwt multipurpose (MPP) vessel Yong Sheng (built 2002). This summer, five Coscol units were active in the Arctic. By 2018, the company expects to have six vessels on its twice-per-summer semi-liner China-Europe service through the Northeast Passage.
