An appeals court battle is widely expected after a US judge ruled that OW Bunker and its main secured creditor ING Bank do not have maritime liens empowering them to arrest vessels over unpaid bunker bills.

In a decision that is seen as a positive for shipowners and operators, District Judge Katherine Forrest of the federal court in New York rejected the liens in four of the dozens of cases that have been filed in several jurisdictions over fuel invoices owing at the time of OW’s dramatic collapse in November 2014.
