Containerships being sent for demolition are getting bigger and younger in what is already a record year.

Top owners continue to send ever larger boxships to the breakers with the 6,078-teu Conti Madrid (built 2003) joining the ranks.

The vessel has been scrapped for a reported $308 per ldt “as is” in Dubai with some bunkers remaining on board.

It is the latest of several vessels sold by German owner Conti Reederei that include the 5,744-teu Eva (ex-Conti Porto, built 2001), one of two sisterships of this design that it had previously on long-term charter to Hanjin Shipping.
