A lack of fresh newbuilding orders has led to shipowners laying down tough newbuilding terms for yards.

Industry players say Maersk Tankers’ recent contract for long-range-two (LR2) tankers at Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co (DSIC) demonstrates how buyers have the upper hand in forging newbuilding deals.

Last month, Maersk Tankers was reported to have signed for six firm 115,000-dwt products carriers, plus six options, at state-owned DSIC priced at between $41m and $44m apiece.
