Professor Richard Watson is leading the way in defining maritime infomatics as a new sub-discipline in information systems, with the goal to increase the efficiency, safety and ecological sustainability of the world’s shipping industry.
Speaking at a gathering in Gothenburg hosted by Swedish maritime competence centre Lighthouse, he said the journey towards autonomous ships is “all about automating decision making — millions of decisions per second — and smarter decision making starts with data”.
